The Board of County Supervisors is an eight member board elected by the residents of Prince William County. They are the policy-making body for the County government.

The Department of Transportation is responsible for implementing a transportation program that covers all modes of transportation. To do this, the Department plans and coordinates the County's transportation program with State and Federal agencies. The Department also manages transportation capital improvement projects and works with the Board of County Supervisors to find effective solutions that resolve transportation issues.

The Office of Planning is responsible for the review of development applications such as re-zonings, special use permits, comprehensive plan amendments, zoning approvals and zoning appeals and variances. The office also acts as staff to the Planning Commission, Board of Zoning Appeals, Historical Commission and Architectural Review Board.
